SUMMER CAMP The mission of our summer camp program is to build literacy skills and provide enriching opportunities for children with dyslexia to engage in STEM, the arts, executive function building, and social emotional learning along with more traditional summer camp activities. Literacy Skill Building Skill regression during the summer is typical for all children, but for students with dyslexia, losing literacy skills that take so much time and energy to develop in the first place can be particularly discouraging. Each day students at HCLS Summer Camp will engage in phonological awareness and literacy skill activities and games. STEM and the Arts Children with dyslexia often thrive in STEM and the arts, and we believe that helping kids with dyslexia requires more than just literacy skill intervention. Kids with dyslexia and other learning differences need ample opportunities to explore areas that make them feel excited and successful. HCLS Summer Camp will provide daily opportunities for kids to explore, create, and innovate. Executive Function Building People with dyslexia often have difficulty with executive function skills such as attention and working memory. HCLS Summer Camp will spend time each day on activities that are designed to engage both sides of the brain and boost executive function skills. Social-Emotional Learning School can be a traumatic experience for kids with dyslexia. HCLS Summer Camp allows kids to interact with peers that share similar challenges in a safe environment where they will learn techniques to manage stress and anxiety, how to develop a growth mindset, and ways to advocate for their emotional and educational needs. Just For Fun What summer camp would be complete without getting messy? We want kids to be excited about attending HCLS Summer Camp, so campers will also get to cut loose and enjoy relays, water play activities, trying out new slime recipes, and more!
